Stunning Sommelier Selections by our Friend, the Glebe's own Award-Winning Sommelier J.Phillip Nicholson
2018 Irida Agiorgitiko/ Syrah Rosé (12%, Achaia Geographical Indication, Greece) $20
This fiery-orange and pink gem earned its glorious taste the old-fashioned way - through hard work; the grapes are grown on non-irrigated vineyards that trade off low yields for intense flavours of forest fruits, blackberries and plums. Marry this with SEN's vegetable and salmon dishes.
2017 Skouras Moschofilero(12.0%, Arcada IGP, Greece) $25
This is a crisp, dry, acidic, floral and refreshingly steely white wine. Pronounced "owe-so-feeel-air-oh" the grape is indigenous to the Peloponnese area of Greece. This medium-bodied aromatic dry white offers hints of white flowers and honeysuckle, backed up with notes of citrus fruits and lime, and a pleasingly long finish. It is an ideal aperitif and a wonderful complement to SEN's fish dishes.
2018 Famille Sichel "Les Hauts de Bel Air" Sauvignon Blanc (11.5%, AOC Bordeaux, France) $20
This is a relatively rarity from Bordeaux, being made of 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes rather than the usual blend with Semillon. The result is a crisp and clean delight that is a natural o par wth SEN's appetizers and vegetarian dishes, as well as their fish and chicken offerings.
2018 Konzelmann Estate Winery "Lakefront Series" Unoaked Chardonnay (13.0%, VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario) $22
The crisp, refreshing and gloriously bright yellow-gold wine offers classic citrus and tropical fruit flavours that beautifully enhance all of the appetizer and main dishes featuring chicken and fish, including SEN's specialty teriyaki chicken and teriyaki salmon. Winery founder Herb Konzelmannn is a fourth-generation winemaker who discovered the world-class microclimate and soils of Niagara in 1984 and has been a leading champion and innovator of award-winning Ontario wines for the past quarter century. Truly a Canadian wine hero.
2018 Bellingham "The Old Orchards" Chenin Blanc (14.3%, Paarl, South Africa) $22
This wine's 25 year old bush vines offer lower yields but richer flavours. The result is a zesty and refreshing white whose classic apple, melon and citrus elements and mineral and spice overtones bring out the best of SEN's tasty grilled pork belly skewer appetizer as well as all of the chicken dishes.
2018 Danube-Kutjevo Vineyard Graševina (12.0%, Slavonia, Croatia) $22
With its delightful yellow-green crystal colour, floral and fruity bouquet, and exciting freshness, this single-vineyard white is a glorious match for appetizers, rice dishes, chicken and fish. A storied winery in Croatia, Kutjevo is described as "the spiritual home" of Graševina wines since 1232.
2018 Featherstone "Four Feathers" Riesling/ Gewurztraminer/ Sauvignon Blanc/ Chardonnay (12.0%, Niagra Peninsula VQA, Ontario) $20
If you're looking for the perfect match for SEN's spicier dishes - including their signature Pad Thai - this brilliant blending of four classic grapes yields all the flavours you want with Asian fusion fare - grapefruit, ginger, pineapple, pear, fresh flowers.
ALLURING DRY RED
2017 Beronia Tempranillo (14.0%, Rioja DOC, Spain) $19
Here's a superb match with SEN's steak teriyaki or on its own... because you'll just love the elegant northern Spansh wine that yields generous layers of berry fruit flavours, cedar and spice.
2016 Pere Cruz "Reserva" Cabernet Sauvignon (13.5%, D.O. Valle de Maipo, Chile) $20
Harvested from the winery's Luga vineyard, the grapes of this Chilean charmer present a delightfully rich and aromatic wine with dark berry spiciness and hints of mint and balsamic. Perfect with SEN's meat dishes ad flavourful stir fry offerings. A gem on its own, too.
2015 Lovico Winery Gamza (13.5%, Suhindol, Bulgaria) $19
This elegant northwestern Bulgarian grape - known as Kadarka in other Balkan countries - reveals crushed berry, ripe red and black fruit flavours with dried fruit undertones and a pepper spice accent. A lovely match for SEN's appetizers and red meat dishes, and gorgeous on is own too.
2018 Kaiken Malbec (14.5%, Mendoza, Argentina) $22
This is a robust, well-balanced and flavourful red that features blueberry, raspberry and chocolate notes. It's a lusciously compelling red to savour on its own, but an absolute gem with any of the beef dishes.
2015 The Hogue Cellars "Genesis" Meritage (13.5%, Columbia Valley, Washington) $28
Genesis is a stunningly complex and vibrant west coast red that combines the best of all the classic "Bordeaux" grapes (hence "Meritage") from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot vines planted are than 30 years ago.
